Our client, an international ship management company that has been in operation since 2007 with offices in Germany and Cyprus, is looking to employ a Crew Training Manager.
The successful candidate will join the team at the group's offices in Limassol, Cyprus and will be reporting directly to the Fleet Manager.
The Training Officer’s primary responsibility is the development and implementation of shipboard training strategies, plans, and processes to support organizational goals. The position is responsible for delivering and assessing current and future training needs, creating training and career development programs and delivering training to new Crew joining the company before they board the vessels. The role will also include the constant review and assessment of the trained Crew onboard the vessels as they carry out their day-to-day duties, identifying further training needs.

The main Tasks and Responsibilities include:

Training and Development

  • Promote Training & Development across the Fleet
  • Deliver training to Officers and crew at all levels on board the vessels
  • Maintain awareness of industry standards and best practice
  • Work with on board Managers to identify training & development needs and performance gaps and develop training solutions
  • Assist, support and coach shipboard Management in the facilitation of on-the-job and technical skills training
  • Keep accurate training records and monitor compliance of training requirements
  • Liaise with all invested stakeholders to support succession planning, career path identification and tracking to facilitate the development of shipboard employees for promotion opportunities
  • Co-ordinate learning support activities to prepare shipboard employees for supervisory /managerial roles
  • Attend meetings, training courses and other work-related activities as required
  • Develop training as per SIRE 2.0 standards including follow-up
  • Arrange and host senior officer’s briefings
  • Participate in the organisation of crew gatherings
  • Set up crew development strategy including respective training (e.g. for promotions) and follow up
  • Set up training schedule for deck- and engine cadets. This will include personal contact to universities, negotiations, and agreements.
  • Set up promotion scheme and follow up

Marine Personnel

  • Provide the Management with recommended strategies relating to training matters for improvement/compliance.
  • Improvement and development of the Company Safety & Quality Manual (SQM)
  • Liaise with the Management Teams with regards to manning/personnel issues raised on board
  • Support on board managers and department heads with regards to performance management through appraisals and career development plans
  • Offer advice and training with regards to handling disciplinary matters and executing Masters, Officers and crew hearings
  • Oversee cross training process and records
  • Attend OHSSE and SMT meetings whilst on board and review minutes from other vessels
  • Work closely with Department Managers with regards to development and delivery of training materials for use on board

Safety, Drills, Meetings

  • Must be familiar with the ship’s “Emergency Plan”, the “Muster List”, the ship’s “Code of Conduct” and the “SQM”
  • Participate in on board familiarisation, drills, Snr Management and Departmental meetings whilst on board as required
  • Maintain awareness and skills to train in Occupational Health and Safety training
  • Observe Safety Drills, Familiarisation, Induction Training and offer advice and guidance
  • Observe Training delivered by Offices and offer advice and guidance on training methods.

The ideal candidate will have:

Education and Qualifications

  • Good standard of general education
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Knowledge of the STCW Convention Code
  • Knowledge of ISM / ISPS and MLC
  • Excellent knowledge of Office programmes – PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Word
  • Train the trainer qualification Certificate of Competency will be an advantage
  • Proven experience in public speaking/delivering training programmes
  • Experience of developing training material and presentations
  • Ability to communicate with multicultural crew and on a variety of levels
  • The ability to coach people and give constructive feedback
  • A desire to motivate and develop individuals
  • Flexible approach in delivering training in order not to disrupt on board operation
  • Preferably seagoing experience, minimum ex Chief Officer or Second Officer would be acceptable
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a similar position is a must
